SPINE SURGERY-

What is spine surgery?

Back injuries, and more specifically spinal injuries, have become a problem that affects more and more people around the world. The passage of time, accidents, overexertion and poor posture in everyday life are the causes of the problem.

Spinal surgery allows surgeons to decompress, move, and repair vertebral structures and replace them if necessary. Back surgery is an option to consider when conservative treatments have not worked and pain persists and prevents the development of a normal life.

Types of Spine Surgery?

  • Discectomy: consists of removing the herniated part of the disc to access the inflamed nerve and relieve its irritation.
  • Laminectomy: The bone that covers the vertebrae is removed and enlarged to relieve pressure from a stricture.
  • Fusion: Spinal fusion consists mainly of joining two or more bones of the spine. This can alleviate pain by stabilizing a fracture or simply eliminate pain that begins with the movement of the vertebrae, which can degenerate or injure some of the spinal discs.
  • Disc implant: As an alternative to fusion, there is the disc implant, although not everyone can use it.

Preparing for spine surgery:-

The patient is usually admitted to the clinic where the operation will be performed one day before undergoing it. The anaesthesia tests, as well as the physical and preoperative examinations, will already be performed at the time of the patient’s admission.
They should not eat or drink anything for at least 12 hours before the surgery begins. Aside from the basics, spinal surgery does not require any special preparation, although you should be prepared to face the weeks of recovery, when it may need

How serious is spinal surgery?

Most spinal surgeries are safely performed under general anaesthesia without many complications. Medicine will be given through an intravenous (IV) line to make you sleep so that you will not feel pain during the procedure. The risks of anaesthesia are rare but serious. These risks include heart attack, stroke, brain damage, and death.

Care after spinal surgery:

Normally, the patient will be admitted for observation for several days, and once he returns home he will have to face recovery.
It is important to keep the wound clean and follow the instructions or recommendations provided by the specialist. If the patient has undergone a discectomy, it is common for him to feel pain or weakness, although recovery is rapid and symptoms should improve markedly within a week or two after surgery.

In fusion surgery, recovery is more complicated because you will need to rest and not return to your daily activities for at least three to four months, and bone healing can take more than a year to complete.
If the patient has undergone spinal fusion, he should rest and not engage in daily activities for about two months.

Most common spinal surgery?

Laminectomy. This is the most common surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis. In this procedure, a surgeon removes parts of the bone, bone spurs, or ligaments from the back. This relieves pressure on the spinal nerves and can relieve pain or weakness, but the procedure can make your spine less stable.

Which surgery is best for the spine?

Lumbar Decompression: The goal of lumbar decompression surgery is to relieve pain caused by pinching the nerve root. The surgery provides more space for the nerve root to heal the nerve. Lumbar Fusion: Lumbar fusion surgery is performed to stop pain in the painful motion segment in the lower back.

What is the success rate of spinal surgery?

Repeat spine surgery is a diminishing returns treatment option. Although more than 50% of primary spinal surgeries are successful, no more than 30%, 15%, and 5% of patients experience a successful outcome after the second, third, and fourth surgeries, respectively.

What are the side effects of spine surgery?

  • Recurrent or continuing symptoms
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Dural tear
  • Leakage of cerebrospinal fluid
  • Nerve injury and paralysis
  • Death

Can you live a normal life after spinal fusion?

Even people who require larger surgeries, such as spinal fusion, have a 90% chance of returning to work and staying at work long-term. While most people recover from back pain through exercise and healthy lifestyles, those requiring surgery can expect to return to work and “get their life back” as well.

How long does spinal surgery take?

Spinal fusion surgery is done in a hospital. The average length of stay is 2 to 7 days. How long does it take? It normally takes between 3 and 7 hours depending on the complexity of the surgery.

Can you walk after back surgery?

Walking is the best activity you can do for the first 6 weeks after surgery. It should start slowly and build up to 30 minutes at least twice a day. Don’t be surprised if you need frequent naps during the day.

What can you not do after back surgery?

No matter what type of back surgery you are undergoing, and no matter how well your pain is controlled, it is vital that you avoid bending, lifting, and twisting. Bending at the waist, lifting more than 10 pounds, and twisting the torso put undue pressure on the vulnerable spine.

What Are the Benefits?

  • You can move around better
  • You’re more physically fit
  • Your mood improves
  • You don’t need to take as much pain medicine
  • You can go back to work
  • You’re more productive at work
